It's hard to hide your smile when you're retired and fishing is your new day job. Charlie Nelson spends his day's on the St. Louis River, fishing with friends or guiding strangers to fish. We started our day on the water running small crank baits down the channel, searching for the walleye off the bottom. The opening of this fishing season has brought challenges we haven't see for awhile. "They're more spread out, they're not as concentrated as they are typically in the Spring when they're pre-spawning, running up to spawn. Last year it was cold early so they kind of went last so they were very concentrated in smaller areas, then it's a lot easier," said Charlie Nelson of Nelson's Guide and Charter Service.

Charlie and his buddy Phil Rust had success Saturday on the opener, "Colors seem to matter, you got to find a color. It only takes one to spill the beans so keep switching up until you find the one that's working," said Nelson. Fourteen walleye found their way into the live-tank, and this fisherman keeps it honest. "I have is a counter because all fisherman are liars, so we actually keep a count going all season long of the number of walleye we boat, one fish one click," said Nelson. For the past few years, he's had just under 300 clicks a season. Charlie says be flexible, keep changing and trying different things.
