St. Louis County Attorney Melanie Ford won't officially file for candidacy until Tuesday. But she's already gotten a lot of support from the public.

"I get calls on a daily basis that say, 'We've got to get you reelected.'" she said. "It is really encouraging and keeps me motivated."

Some of those folks attended her campaign kickoff on Monday.

"Melanie has done a great job county-wide meeting the needs of all the people," said Stan Kaitfors. "I particularly like that she's reached out to those who are low income, people of color, and those who are disenfranchised."

Between sips of root beer floats, other Ford supporters say she is a strong advocate for women and minorities, and that it's a critical quality to represent the county attorney's office. Ford say has kept promises from her initial campaign four years ago, and intends to keep that momentum going if she is reelected.

"I'll continue to try and keep kids in school and off drugs, continue our practices to get better prosecutions and better results for victims of crime," said Ford.

Ford says she has four years as the county attorney under her belt, and brings many more years of leadership to the table. But Robert Powless says Ford doesn't rest on that experience.

"She's always going to meetings and training she doesn't have to be at to find out more things about her job that will help in the long run," Powless said.

Ford's opponent in this election is long-time prosecutor Mark Rubin. Ford says there has been no animosity between the two thus far, and she doesn't expect any. Ford says Rubin has promised to run a clean campaign, and she plans to do the same.
