The Chisholm Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension (BCA) released the names of the three victims in a shooting Saturday night in a Chisholm bar. All are Chisholm residents.
Edward John Walberg, 40, died as a result of his injuries on Saturday night. Larry Vernon Elj, 38, was injured in the shooting and is hospitalized at Fairview University Medical Center in Hibbing. Cale Steve Nelson, 29, was also injured and taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. Nelson is listed in critical condition, and authorities say he is "fighting for his life."
Investigators believe that on Saturday night at about 9:45 p.m., the 47-year-old suspect in the shooting confronted his ex-wife inside Jim's Sports Club Bar & Grill, 101 W. Lake Street. When Nelson intervened, investigators say the suspect left the bar and returned a short time later with a gun.
The suspect allegedly shot Nelson, Walberg and Elj before being subdued by another bar patron. The suspect was injured during the incident. His injuries are believed to be non life-threatening.
Authorities confirmed Sunday that he is a past Chisholm police officer (1983-1989), and currently employed by the city's water crew.
Investigators from the Chisholm Police Department, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota State Patrol and agents from the BCA collected evidence and interviewed witnesses throughout the night. The investigation is on-going. The BCA is leading the investigation at the request of the Chisholm Police Department.
