The Wage Subsidy Program is helping Northland businesses hire. About 70 new jobs have been created, within about 40 companies. 30 more jobs are pending.

One million dollars was allocated by Iron Range Resources for the program. Companies are eligible for up to $25,000, to help pay for new hires' wages.

Tonia Sundquist, owner of First Class Daycare Center in Eveleth, was able to hire two people using the program.

"I'm able to provide better quality of care and curriculum for kids, parents and the community," she said. "This program is a godsend."

First Class just opened in September. Sundquist said she wouldn't have been able to hire Lizz Runiga, without help.

"I'm so glad I have this opportunity, it's awesome," said Runiga. She helps teach the kids Spanish.

Applications are still available for the program, because only 1/3 of the money has been used. Call the Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training for more information: 218-748-2200.
