MADISON – Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle announced today that Obama Administration officials will meet with Great Lakes Governors regarding the threat of Asian carp to the Great Lakes on Monday, February 8, 2010 at the White House.

Governor Doyle, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn will meet with Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and Obama Administration officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Coast Guard.  The meeting will focus on discussing strategies to combat the spread of Asian carp and ensure coordination and the most effective response across all levels of government.

“I am very pleased with the Obama Administration’s quick action on this important issue and their pledge of $5 billion to restore and protect the Great Lakes,” Governor Doyle said.  “We must act immediately to protect the Great Lakes, our region’s greatest natural resource, against the devastating threat of Asian carp.  We look forward to working with the White House to protect this fragile ecosystem against Asian carp and other harmful invasive species.”

Governor Doyle has taken aggressive steps to stop the spread of Asian carp and other invasive species into the Great Lakes including: using his leadership as Chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors to advocate for strong and decisive action by the Army Corps of Engineers to construct and turn on the electric carp barrier, providing direct financial support for the electrical barrier, and significantly increasing state funding for combating aquatic invasive species.
