Police say they expect the victim to live. "It's kind of strange to have someone that's so close to the establishment be hurt like that," said Brad Edstrom. He described himself on Sunday, as the victim's "good friend." Edstrom said his friend had been a "regular" at Curly's Bar for several years who was not one to get in fights. "He's the kind of person that intervenes in situations like this," Edstrom said. "It's heartbreaking because he's the kind of person who tries to keep the peace." According to authorities, the victim told them that the stabbing had taken place outside of Curly's Bar. Police say the victim was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital with deep stab wounds to his head and neck area.Doctors said the injuries were non-life threatening but that a temporal artery was cut and the victim would have bled to death had he not received medical treatment when he did. The suspect, a 23-year-old Duluth man, was located at a residence in the 2200 block of West 3rd Street. It's Eyewitness News' policy not to name suspects until they have been charged. Several witnesses to the stabbing had chased him from the scene to that area. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Louis County Jail where he is being held pending formal charges for Attempted Second Degree Murder and Second Degree Assault. The victim told officers that he and the suspect had a verbal argument outside of Curly's before the stabbing. The suspect admitted to having a verbal dispute with "someone," but denied that it got physical. "There's no way to understand why this would happen," Edstrom said outside of Curly's. "How do you even understand it?" |
