Remembering Emmy

Emerald "Emmy" Foss would have turned 19 on Wednesday. Her friends and family marked the occasion, with a special balloon release at the baseball field in Coleraine.

"It's hard, and I'm sad, but it's a good occasion. I knew how much I loved Emmy, but it's nice to see so many other people did too," her mother Linda Foss said.

A short prayer was said, and then, Linda Foss released the first balloon

Hundreds followed, drifting into the fall sky. Most of the balloons had hand-written messages from classmates and friends.

The group sang Happy Birthday, and many classmates circled close after the balloon release.

Foss was from Bovey and graduated from Greenway last spring.

She died one month ago, when the car she was riding in was hit by a school bus. The crash happened on Highway 169 in Coleraine.

The other two girls in the crash, Hailey Salo and Paige Anderson, remain hospitalized in Duluth.

There is a spaghetti dinner benefit for the Foss family, on Saturday, November 14th, at the Eagles Club in Grand Rapids, 3pm-7pm.

Monetary donations can be made at any US Bank branch as well.
