Silver Bay Fire Chief John Fredrickson says two or three rooms were destroyed. The others sustained smoke and water damage. The motel has another seven room building which was not affected. No one was injured in the fire. A group of deer hunters were staying in the rooms, but were out hunting at the time. They say most of their belongings were salvaged. Fredrickson says the fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire. But they believe it started in a small utility room in the center section of the building. Fredrickson says the motel was popular among hunters and snowmobilers. Whispering Pines owner Robert Cox declined to comment on camera. He's owned it for seven years, but says the motel had been there for at last half a century and is a pillar on the North Shore. Cox is unsure at this point if he'll rebuild. Authorities say no foul play is suspected. |
