Updated at: 10/30/2009 10:52 PM Webber Sentenced to Jail TimeLast month, a jury found William Webber guilty of three misdemeanor charges including two counts of fourth degree sexual assault.Webber will serve six months in a Douglas County jail, plus two years probation. Webber must register as a sex offender and will be listed in the registry for 15 years after his probation ends. He is not allowed to contact the victim or his family. According to the criminal complaint, Webber inappropriately touched the victim on two different occasions in August and October 2008. Webber remained stoic throughout the sentencing hearing on Friday. When the judge gave him a chance to speak, he declined. Before Webber was sentenced, the victim's mother read a letter he had written, saying this situation has left him feeling confused and it's harder for him to open up. "Things now are just awkward and sometimes he gets nervous, and thoughts will sometimes come back up about it," she said. "I guess what he's trying to say is things won't really be the same." She also spoke directly to Webber, saying she trusted him with her son. "You chose him, you groomed him and waited for him until you could have your way with him," she said, "That's what you did. We both know you had these intentions. As a police officer, you knew how to get away with it." Judge Kenneth Kutz acknowledged that this is Webber's first criminal conviction, and all three charges were misdemeanors. But Kutz said these events occurred at the tail end of a trusting relationship, and Webber took advantage of the victim's vulnerability, leaving a lasting impact. Kutz also said the " potential grooming behavior" in this case makes Webber a risk to the public. Prosecuting attorney Sean Duffy says he feels the two year probation and six months of jail time are appropriate, and the required sex offender registry is "huge." Defense attorney Chris Granstrup says he thinks the sentence is outside the normal range for these charges, and is disappointed Webber's character didn't carry more weight. Webber must begin his jail sentence within 60 days. |
