The Ares sailed into town under the lift bridge around 10:30 Tuesday morning. She had made a long journey, from Texas, up the Mississippi, and through the St. Lawrence Seaway. But it wasn't without drama.
"We had to sink the ship, to get it through a bridge in Illinois," said owner Mike Ojard. Sink the ship?
The crew had to put water into the ballast and fuel tanks, to lower the ship enough into the water to get it under that bridge.
That's nothing compared to what she's been through though. She sat through Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Katrina.
"She's a diamond in the rough," Ojard said. He plans on re-naming her for his great grandfather, Nels J.
The Ares has more horsepower than any other tug in the harbor. She will help Ojard's company, Heritage Marine, break up ice and guide salties into and around piers and docks.
