Northshore Inline Marathon

In its 14th year, the Northshore Inline Marathon continues to attract the best racers from around the globe. Last saturday, 39 states and 3 foreign countries were represented.

The half and full marathon is the largest inline event in the United States. The race hosted approximately 2800 skaters along the shore of Lake Superior. "It was a great day, great race, tail wind, perfect conditions, it was a wonderful skate," said Sue Scheer who has skated all 14 marathons. "You come around this one corner and you see gitchi gummee and it just gives energy to everybody and there's always a whoop and a yell and everybody gets enthused just seeing the lake," she said.

Tom Goth skated his third marathon. "It was a riot, it was just a gas today. "We just keep boogeying, hammering down until the finish line," he said.

But no one hammered down to the finish like like the Colombians. Juliana Rivera was the overall winner, with a time just over 59 minutes. Rivera didn't break the course record like he had hoped but did find redemption. "I feel very happy because last year I was suppose to win and I fell in the last corner. So this year I finally did," Rivera said.

16-year-old Isabel Bernier, also from Colombia, claimed the women's title. "I'm going to come back and the next and the next and the next. Every year I'm going to be in this race," Bernier said. "It's very beautiful, to see the lake and the houses and the people it was very funny," she added.

Bernier's father said she has a drive to be the very best in her sport. "Your dream is a different life. We are emotion with this moment because she is very young. You have a big dream and your dream is this," he said.

Our Sarah Frakes dream was to finish the half. She did in one hour and forty five minutes. She can't wait for next year!
