It was all hands, and feet, off the deck for 50 crew members of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock.
They were doing their yearly emergency training. That included jumping off the side of the boat, and swimming to a certain point and back. To make things more fun, it was turned into a competition.
"Damage Control Olympics are a fun way to exercise the crew in these things like firefighting and flood control. We train for these, but hope to never have to use them," said Lt. Heather Serumgard, Executive Officer.
Teams practiced things like hooking up hoses, putting on firefighting suits, and communicating disaster information. Each task was timed.
The prize for winning? A day of leave, which is highly prized.
The Hollyhock has been in the Twin Ports all summer. She spent 10 weeks in drydock for major maintenance at Fraser Shipyards. She'll sail out to Port Huron, her home port, next week.
