This year's Cloquet football team is coming back with an extra spring in their step. "These guys they just really love the game, I think we've been impressed this year as coaches just how hard they've worked," said head coach Tom Lenarz. "T
hey've kind of embraced the challenge of being a small school and playing the bigger schools," Lenarz added. The Lumberjacks finished 7-4 last season, with an appearance in the section championship for the first time in almost 20 years. Cloquet was defeated by the then undefeated Duluth East. "Last year we made it to the final game, and of course East is a good team but they lost a lot. We're hoping to make it to that final game and come out on top this time," said senior captain and quarterback Tyler Tollerud.
In order to attain that goal, the team knows there is no substitute for hard work. Throughout the summer, almost every player spent Monday through Thursday in the weight room. "The guys have put in a lot of work in the off season, it's our best showing that we've ever had I believe so it'll be a really good season," said senior captain and linebacker Jake Horn.
That work ethic has transferred to the field in the first weeks of practice. "We just come out here and fly around, ready to play, always hustling everywhere," said junior cornerback/QB Joey Singpiel.Twenty seniors return, including wide reciever turned running back Ra Ra Jones. Jones was injured halfway through the season last year.
The Lumberjacks first test as a new team will come at home on September 4th, but they'll pick up right where they left off, a clash against Duluth East."
