When you're looking for new challenging workout and you can't seem to find what you're looking for, why not create your own? That's how the Shred class at Ignite Studio came to be, thanks to instructor Danny Strohman.

Shred is a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class set to electronic dance music (EDM).

"You give 100% in short bursts. So we do 40 seconds on, 20 seconds off. It's a great way to burn fat and build lean muscle," explained Danny.

The atmosphere is club-like, with loud music and disco lights. It's a welcome distraction from your screaming muscles.

"It [music] gives you a strong beat to keep going, especially during the last round of high really helps to power you through the workout," he said.

Danny sets up a cycle of exercises and then takes the class through five sets. Just one cycle is tough, so going through five sets really pushes muscles to the limit.

For our Workout Wednesday, exercises included one-handed plank jacks, jumping lunges, mountain climbers, in-and-outs, child's pose push-ups, and weighted burpees. In between the exercises, 20 seconds in traditional yoga poses, such as downward dog or child's pose, offers a short rest.

"Anyone can do shred. People hear high intensity and they automatically count themselves out. But you're giving 100% of YOUR effort, so take it to your level. There are modifications for everything, too," said Danny.

Shred is currently exclusive to Ignite. The class is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. You can find a full class schedule here.

Also at Ignite, they will be starting Aerial and Barre classes the first week of April. Later in the month, on April 20, Ignite will host an open house with special classes and free entry to anyone new to the studio. You can find more information about Ignite on their Facebook page.

Ignite Studio was formerly known as Zstudio. They moved into their new location in the Holiday Center in downtown Duluth in early February. The studio is located on the corner of 2nd Ave West and Superior Street.
