This Workout Wednesday is all about the heart. Destination Fitness' new studio has a lot to offer - triathlon training, personal training, and a wide array of classes - including their heart-pumping High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) class.
Owners Mike and Julie Hendrickson have been in business since 2012. In August, they opened their studio off Rice Lake Road, just outside of Duluth.
Their HIIT class aims to get the heart working extra hard.
"So many people just work out at that steady, somewhat-high but not really high heart rate zone, but it's super good for your heart and your body to get that heart rate higher than is comfortable," Julie explained.
The HIIT class includes taking on different exercises - such as box jumps, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and burpees - and doing intervals of each exercise. During Good Morning Northland's small taste of the class, we would do the exercise for 15 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest, then do 20 seconds of the exercise, 15 seconds of rest, and finally 30 seconds of the exercise, and 25 seconds of rest.
Julie says reaching a high heart rate during HIIT helps you get more out of your workout.
"It actually creates an oxygen deficit in your body...So when you create that deficit, after your workout your body is still trying to catch up, which means it's working after your workout, which means you are burning calories at your desk," she said.
