Two different shows are running at the Duluth Playhouse this month as a part of their Teen Intensive program. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' hits the stage Thursday, August 10, while 'Legally Blonde: The Musical' starts Friday, August 11. Actors Bailey Stender and Lizzie Brock dropped by for a preview of both productions.
'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is the classic comedy written by the great William Shakespeare. It follows mismatched lovers Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena as they encounter a situation that will alter their lives forever. Lizzie Brock, who plays multiple characters in the production, explains that the set has a 1920s/1930s circus theme. This matches well with the comedic, mystical tones of the play.
'Legally Blonde: The Musical' tells the story of Elle Woods. She's a sorority sister, Valley girl going to Harvard Law to get her boyfriend back. After some time at the school and with the help of friends, she eventually finds her true potential. This hilarious musical is based on the novel written by Amanda Brown and the MGM movie starring Reese Witherspoon.
Both productions are completely run by teens ages 13 - 18. Stender explains that the program runs about a month long, with both casts rehearsing throughout. To add, she says that while one cast is rehearsing, the other is helping behind the stage.
"We get to learn different technical aspects of theater," she said.
This will work the same way on production nights. One cast will work behind the scenes while the other performs and vice-versa. This includes every aspect of the backstage, like scene changes, costume changes, lighting, etc.
