President of the race, Mike Keyport, says the race is named after Keyport's grandfather. He say's John carried mail from Two Harbors to Grand Marais and back for almost 20 years.

"These were kind of mutts, three and four dog teams carrying some pretty large weights."

Events started last weekend with the "Cutest Puppy Contest" at Fitger's and a "Cub Run" for young kids in Two Harbors.

Things pick up again on Friday with "Beergrease" at Glensheen mansion. There, folks will be able to enjoy some great food and drink specials, including a "Beergrease" beer from Canal Park Brewing.

Veterinarian checks start on Saturday in Beaver Bay. Opening ceremonies will follow.

All will lead up to the Sunday start.

As it's happening, the race coordinator, judges, and vets all follow the race to make sure everyone is safe.

"The dogs safety comes first. The musher's safety is second, then of course the fan base and spectators and whoever else is out there on the trail," Keyport says.

Good Morning Northland and Eyewitness News will both be covering the race from beginning to end. Stay with us for updates.
