This is not the first time Grand Rapids has hosted the event, but they are always looking for events to add to the weekend.

"Every time that we host, we want to do something different and shake it up a little bit and have some new celebrations and new events going on, " Christianson explained.

A new event this year is a 3D archery shoot. Various teams in the Nationals Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) will face off against each other. The shoot will run in part with the "Welcome to Deer Camp Expo."

That expo will kick off the festivities Thursday, November 2 from 3 p.m to 6 p.m. It'll include a number of hunting-related vendors along with plenty of immersive activities for folks.

While many are excited for the hunting aspect of the expo, one of the highlights may be the sausage contest. Christianson explains that different butcher shops around the area will face off against each other, bringing their best "sausage stick" to the table. The expo is free and open to the public.

A banquet will follow the expo, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for are $35 per person.

The city is looking for help with putting on the Governor's hunting opener. Christianson says that volunteers are needed at the different events.

Hunter hosts are needed as well. Hosts will be matched up with media and other dignitaries who may want to participate as hunters during the weekend.

There are also openings for businesses to help sponsor the weekend's activities.
