A favorite Disney story is coming to life on the Duluth Playhouse stage with help from dozens of young actors and community volunteers. Disney's 'The Lion King Jr!' is opening this Thursday, and the Playhouse Children's Theatre is one of the first community-based groups licensed to perform it in the country.

The 90-minute musical is based on the Broadway production and the 1994 Disney Film.

Since the start of production last fall, they've had a lot of help from the Northland community.

"We've been working with over 50 volunteers on a nightly basis since October pretty much," director Kate Horvath said.

Horvath is also the Playhouse Artistic and Education Director. She says they have utilized the talents of parent volunteers and community members to make each and every costume piece - from the lion masks of Simba and Mufasa to the cheetahs celebrating the circle of life.

Other community members helping with the production included a UMD professor speaking to the cast about storytelling and African culture and the Duluth City Drum Circle putting on a "Dance-a-thon" during rehearsal.

"We've just been doing all this awesome cross-cultural and interdisciplinary work," Horvath said.

The cast and crew contains approximately 55 students. Horvath says 'The Lion King Jr!' is their advanced show for the Children's Theatre season so the ages range from 13 to 18 years old. Students from seven different schools are represented in the production.

Disney's 'The Lion King Jr!' opens Thursday, March 16 at the Duluth Playhouse. The show runs March 16-26 with shows Thursday-Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
