The Drama Club at Cooper Elementary School in Superior will hit the stage this weekend for their latest production - 'A Laughing Disaster Comedy.'
Drama teacher Dustin Anderson wrote the play, which centers around the disputed 1876 election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. Actors Nora Wells, a fifth grader, and Rainah Morland, a third grader, stopped by GMN Tuesday to chat about their latest production.
“My character is Helga. She is a Russian, goat-lover lady and she may have had something done to the election,” said Nora.
Rainah plays Grandpa John.
“I'm an old man in the play. I'm actually concerned who is going to win,” explained Rainah.
Some of the other characters include Italian barbers, market owners, and a newspaper writer.
“It is a comedy, and drama, and everything in between,” said Nora.
Nora and Rainah say it has been really fun to work on the play and hope people come to see the production because it is a "really, really unique play."
About two dozen 3rd-5th grade students are a part of the production. 'A Laughing Disaster Comedy' opens at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Douglas County Historical Society. There is another performance on Sunday, May 21, at 2:00 p.m. Donations are accepted.
