14-year-old Makayla Pearson took the honor after judges heard from several nominees at an event last week.

Pearson is a student at Denfeld High School in Duluth.

She'll now compete for Minnesota Youth of the Year and a $1,000 college scholarship. If she makes it through the state and regional competitions, she'll go on to nationals for a chance at a $50,000 scholarship.
